Chiropractic and Spinal Care

Chiropractic and Spinal Care

What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a healthcare profession that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, with special emphasis on the spine. We use manual therapy including spinal manipulation, joint and soft-tissue manipulation, also includes exercise, health and lifestyle counselling.

Chiropractic adjustments are very fast and gentle, these are applied predominantly by hand; the chiropractor will make the adjustment with a small force in a specific direction, allowing your body to release the stress from the joint, and promoting free movement of the spine, which is why chiropractic is so popular and effective.

What should you expect during your Initial Consultation and Examination? (Day 1), Report of Findings ( Day 2), and X-Ray visits .

The chiropractor will:

  • Day 1 – Take a full case history to establish your general health.
    • Gain your permission for a physical examination which involves orthopaedic testing and neurological screening.
    • Assess your posture and spine.
    • Make a clinic decision if you require an x-ray. ( If an X-ray is required, this will involve an additional visit. Generally, we perform the X-ray on your scheduled Day 2 appointment, and then your Report of Findings appointment will be scheduled the day after the X-ray).
  • Sometimes we might refer you back  to your GP for further investigation if necessary.
  • If you are experiencing significant pain, they may perform a gentle adjustment to provide some relief or suggest a Laser Treatment or Massage if required.
  • X-Ray We will ask you to sign the necessary forms, and then we will take some measurements. Please wear comfortable clothing without any metal parts, or we will provide you with a hospital gown to wear. You will also need to remove any jewelry. Once the X-ray is performed, the results will be reviewed with you the next day during your Day 2 Report of Findings visit.

  • Day 2 – The Chiropractor will explain to you their Report of Findings, including rationale of care, any potential benefit or risk of care, before outlining a treatment schedule.
  • The Chiropractor will educate you about the form of chiropractic treatment you will receive and you will be asked to sign a consent to treatment and care.
  • If there are no contraindications present then you will receive your first Chiropractic adjustment.
  • The aim of a chiropractic treatment is to re-educate your body to stay in its optimal alignment, therefore, a suitable treatment plan may be advised according to each individuals requirement.
  • If you had an X-ray: The chiropractor will review your X-ray results, explain any spinal dysfunctions, and create a personalized care plan for you. If the X-ray shows specific signs of spinal degeneration or issues that could be corrected, the chiropractor will recommend an appropriate corrective plan of care. This plan will include a series of adjustments over time, complemented by simple exercises and lifestyle advice. The goal is to help you recover as quickly as possible.

How might you feel after a treatment?
There is a possibility that your body will react to a treatment. These could be a feeling of stiffness, tiredness, general ache, or being light headed, which should subside within 24 hours. Please consult your chiropractor if you are concerned with the way you react.
